Star Wars: The Old Republic patch 1.7.2 dramatically improves free-to-play quality of life

Before Tuesday, all non-subscribers were slapped with a 25% reduced XP rate at the moment they hit level 10. The rate could only be countered with temporary XP boosters, purchased from the Cartel Store.

Before Tuesday, all non-subscribers were slapped with a 25% reduced XP rate at the moment they hit level 10. The rate could only be countered with temporary XP boosters, purchased from the Cartel Store.
Since Tuesday, free-to-play and Preferred players have had an extra two levels’ grace period, until level 12. From there, XP reduction will gradually increase until it reaches the original flat rate of 25% at level 20. That’s enough time for you to clear your class’ origin planet and explore a good portion of the galaxy, grind-free. From there, players will reportedly now find more experience boost items added to the end of important mission chains and some class missions.

What’s more, free-to-play and Preferred players no longer have a lower cap on the number of Commendations they can carry. Commendations are the planet- and faction-specific currencies found at quest completion or in random drops, exchangeable for gear from specialist dealers.

It’s still my firm belief that BioWare wrongly took a punitive approach to free-to-play. But since the option to play to level 50 subscription-free was introduced in November, a series of small improvements have closed the experiential gulf between the have-subs and the have-sub-nots. The Austin studio have listened to the silent space-screams, changed their approach accordingly, and the game is already vastly better for it.

A slew of other changes and fixes came with Tuesday’s patch. Most are either additions to the store, or relate to bugs found in the recent Return of the Gree update. Oh, and players who were accidentally granted incomplete Digital Deluxe or Collector’s Edition gift packages in an error this week should go here. Full patch notes follow:

General

Although BioWare has not disclosed development costs, industry leaders and financial analysts have estimated it to be between $150 million and $200 million. If accurate, this would make it the most expensive video game ever developed. The game had 1 million subscribers within three days of its launch, making it the world's "fastest-growing MMO ever". However, in the following months the game lost a fair share of its subscriptions, but has remained profitable. The game has since adopted the free-to-play business model.
